I'm back.. and look what I made!

Hello internet friends! It's been quite a while, I didn't mean to be gone that long! I've been pretty busy over the last month and a half with family things, Easter, and the general chaos :) Today, however, is the day I put aside some time to do something. I've been working on a few projects, an old coffee table turned bench (hopefully soon an ottoman!), shirts for Liv, painting these adorable chairs I found at a 'junk' sale, and a few banners. Today I'm going to share the adorable family banner I made, you'll also get a sneak peak at those cute little chairs and the bench!

This genius idea of a banner came to me just this morning! I have a thing for burlap and lace. And together, boy can they make something totally adorable!

You too can make this adorable 'Family' banner, or really a banner with any saying on it!

For this banner you will need:

1. Burlap. You can use it in the 6 or 4 inch rolls, I just happen to have a bolt of it, so I used that.
(Note, after I started cutting this out, I think using the 6 inch rolls would be WAY easier!

2. Freezer paper. This will be your stencil. You can use a Cricut to cut out the letters or you can print on it and then use an X-Acto knife to cut out the letters.

3. Ivory lace (or any color you'd like)

4. Ivory Ribbon (or any color you'd like)

5. White paint

6. Foam stenciling brush

7. Straight pins

8. All purpose thread to match

9. Sewing machine, or just an old fashioned needle :)

10. Iron and ironing board

11. Something to paint the letters on, butcher paper works!

First I cut the triangle using my Cricut to use as my template. Then I cut the triangles out of the burlap. If you're using burlap from a bolt be really careful not to let it fray, it's a little easier to keep under control with the smaller rolls!

Next I cut out my letters on freezer paper with my Cricut. Then I cut the letters apart (don't forget the middle of the 'a'!

Lay out all of your triangles and iron them to get out any wrinkles. I grabbed my lace to make sure when I was placing the letters that I made sure there was room between them and the lace. Make sure to also keep in mind any wide letters you have, such as m's! I had to re-do my 'f' and 'a' to bump them up a little bit. Good news is I didn't have to re-cut them, just move them and then iron them down again.

Iron the freezer paper letters to the burlap.

Next comes the painting. After you have ironed on all of the letters, put something down under where you will paint the letters.

You'll want to be careful and NOT move the letters while you're painting them, otherwise you'll end up with paint all over the back, and it may bleed through to the front.

Carefully paint all of the letters with your sponge brush. I used enough paint that I only needed to do one layer.

Let the letters dry. Peel off the freezer paper and viola! You now have letters on your burlap!

My next step was to sew the lace to the burlap and also sew around all edges.

Pin the lace to your pennant pieces of burlap. and sew around all of the edges. Do this for all of your lettered pennants.

The next step really could have been done wile I was sewing around all of the edges, but I was afraid of screwing it up. So really, you can do this step with the one above or do them separately :) Pin the pennant to the ribbon, make sure to space your pennants out evenly-and in the right order!-- and sew across the top.

Trim all of your extra strings off. That's it, you're done!

Hang it up and enjoy it!

Goodbye Ugly Dresser, Hello Cuteness!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Everyone, meet ugly dresser. Ugly dresser, everyone.

It pains me to put this ugly thing on here. I've never been a fan of it since my husband picked it up. He got it when we first moved in together, and I guess I was too cheap to buy a different one, so I just sucked it up and dealt with this thing. Why I didn't think of painting it until now, I'll never know!

Well, now that that introduction is over, lets move on to the fun stuff!

I've been trying to find my style, what I REALLY like and it has been hard. Finally, I found it! I'm definitely a rustic/French country kind of girl (I would also LOVE to live on a farm, but... I need someone to take care of the farm for me ;) ) Anyway, I've been doing lots of pinning on Pintrest and discovered chalk paint. This stuff is pretty awesome! It's really pretty awesome that no prep is needed other than just cleaning the surface you are going to paint (yay for no sanding needed!) The first brand I found was REALLY expensive for a test run, so I searched around to find something more affordable in the event that I royally screw this up! Americana Decor makes chalk paint that is really pretty affordable, especially in the event you mess it up! Check it out here. They also sell special brushes, but I ordered one from Amazon, you can find that here. You'll also need to get the wax, which will be your top coat, it comes in clear but also other colors.

I ordered a few colors. I have an old coffee table that I want to turn into a bench, so that was my first test. I learned a lot with that test. It's really important that you follow the instructions and paint THIN layers of paint. Thick layers will result in the paint cracking as it dries. While that also goes with the rustic look, that was NOT something I was going for. Lesson learned. When it came time for the dresser I took my time and made sure the coats were nice and thin.

The first coat covered pretty well, but needed a second coat for sure. It's also important that you make sure it is COMPLETELY dry in between coats, or you'll also end up with the paint cracking.

I added the second coat, I had a little bit of cracking on one of the drawers, but not too bad. After the second layer was dry I sanded the edges and distressed it a little. As cute as it was without that, distressing it some made it EVEN BETTER! Plus, that's just my style :) In some of my research it sound like it was better to distress before the wax layer because the wax layer will help protect everything once you put it on. Made sense to me!

After the second coat was dry I applied the wax coat. It's kind of hard to see as you put it on so I used the reflection of the light to make sure I covered it the best I could.

Now... wait for it... The finished piece!

See, doesn't that distressing make it look SO. MUCH. BETTER?!

I hope you all enjoyed! I'm still researching away on the bathroom remodel, and chalk paint is a definite contender. Now, I just need to find time to do it. Ha, I have a feeling that will be a summer project, but as always, I will let you all know so you can follow that FUN!

Weekend Fun in the Sun

Good evening everyone,

While this weekend wasn't a crafting one, it was amazing weather wise! Who can complain about 75 degree days in March?... The beginning of March at that!

This weekend we took a trip to my parents house. We enjoyed that warm warm sunshine and spent most of Saturday outside. Of course, when the weather is nice, we always have to break out the chalk!

I'm not sure who loves it more, me or Liv. Either way, we both have fun and enjoy that vitamin D!

We also discovered that Liv fits the big tricycle that my mom has. My sister and I used to ride up and down the driveway on it when we were kids. Even hooked up the little red wagon to the back!

Look at that big girl! She had a total blast :)

And what goes best with warm days?

Campfires at night of course! Complete with hot dogs ans s'mores :)

Two casualties though. They just jumped off my plate!  Must have been because they were on a hamburger bun and that was just too much for them to handle. Small town and a last minute hot dog roast leave very little options for gluten free buns! Ah, well.

I did decide on one BIG DIY project at my mom's house. Just trying to figure out the best weekend to do it! We're going to re-do her hall bathroom. I'm SO excited, I can hardly control myself and want to start NOW. Don't worry, there will be lots of pictures, before and after. Also, I'll let you know step by step how we did it! It will be quite the adventure, and I can't wait to share it with you all :)

We had a blast this weekend, and hope everyone enjoyed the nice weather in Oregon!

Until next time, my friends :)

Some Bunny Loves You...Easter Dress!

Good evening everyone!

Last time I posted about digital scrapbook paper and how awesome it is. Well, I'm here to blow your mind again with yet ANOTHER amazing thing. Vinyl. Permanent, indoor/removable and heat transfer. All three equally amazing. I briefly touched on this on my first post with Liv's birthday shirt. This stuff is so cool, and it's amazing how you can transform anything!

First, I need to give a shout out to Expressions Vinyl.I order all of my vinyl from there and they're really reasonably priced.

With this post, I am also going to share my Design Space (DS) file, so any of you Cricut users are more than welcome to use!

Today, I spruced up this Old Navy tshirt dress.

For this project you will need:

1 Tshirt/Dress you want to customize.
4 Vinyl colors - I used neon glitter pink, neon glitter purple, glitter white and brown
1 Iron to iron on the vinyl
1 Cricut, to cut all the designs :)

The bunny is layered. The pink and brown are cut out of the white, with the exception of the pink on the bunny's belly. The pink heart nose is also layered on top of the brown one, I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the brown heart and keep the mouth.
The other two eggs are on the other side of the dress.

And OF COURSE Liv had to model :) Isn't this just cute?

That is it for tonight's post, thank you for reading!

Is there anything you want to see a how to for? Let me know, and I'll give it a shot! kate@thechaoticallycreativemom.com.

Oh the things you can CREATE!

Good evening, fine people of the internet.

I have to share my recently discovered love. While I have seen this in the past and thought, why would I buy this, I'm pretty sure I can make this (because if you know me, that's what I like to do. I create it if I can!), I always skipped over paying for digital scrapbook paper. Why, I don't know.

1. It's pretty cheap. Really, you can find free stuff out there, but there's some pretty awesome stuff out there too that's only a couple bucks!

2. You have it FOREVER. Well, unless you don't backup your files (ALWAYS BACKUP! The cloud, I have it and I believe in it!) Need 100 copies of a certain pattern, but don't want to buy the packs of paper that have 5 sheets of the pattern you actually need? No problem! You can print as much as your heart desires.

3. The possibilities are ENDLESS. There are so many patterns out there, and like the point above, you will have an endless supply because it's digital!

Take a look on Etsy, it's one place that has quite a few options and where I purchased my first digital packs of scrapbook paper.

I also completely forgot that my printer will print borderless, so that makes it even better.

Most recently, I've made a spring banner and a birthday card. It's amazing how a pattern, even if it's subtle, can make a BIG difference. The birthday card I'll have to share later because it's my for my husband's birthday (SORRY, nice try, I know you're reading!). After it has safely landed at it's destination I'll share that one, as well as the cute card our daughter did for him.

So for now, here is the cute spring banner that has this digital scrapbook paper.

The pattern in this banner is from this digital scrapbook paper pack, Fresh 493 by VNdigitalart on Etsy. There are so many cute patterns in that pack!

Also, whenever the camera comes out, Liv turns into a TOTAL ham, and this usually happens... This girl makes me giggle!

Enjoy, and talk to you soon!

Welcome!

Welcome to my first blog post!

I'm a mom who LOVES crafts. Any crafts I can do with my daughter are even more fun. I like to see her light up when she gets creative!

I'm also a mom who works full time. The mom gig can easily be a full time job in itself (especially when your husband is deployed!) So throw in a full time job and BOOM, where does all the time go?! Somewhere between being a mom AND working I find time to create some pretty awesome things. And I can't wait to start sharing those pretty awesome things with you!

I received my first Cricut (the Explore) for My birthday last year. Oh. My. Gosh. How have I lived my 28 years WITHOUT this thing? I must say, it's a pretty amazing machine. After unpacking it, I literally watched it draw and cut for hours... I mean HOURS. How that fantastic little machine does it, I'll never now.

Feast your eyes on that beauty. If you've never heard of it, you should check it out, seriously. Right here. I'm a firm believer that everyone should have one of these things!

Most of my craft projects will involve that awesome little machine. I've created quite a few things already. From cards, to gift boxes, to banners and t-shirt designs. The possibilities are truly endless!

My first project I'm going to share with you is one that I completed shortly after receiving my Cricut Explore. I made a cute birthday shirt for my daughter.

She had a Frozen theme birthday party at a Gymnastic's place. TONS of fun! Let me tell you, finding a short sleeve shirt in December can be quite the challenge! Old Navy happened to have a few select colors, the navy worked perfect for her frozen theme :)

I ordered the vinyl from Expressions Vinyl. My opinion, the BEST place to order vinyl, very fast processing and shipping time! I ordered white glitter heat transfer vinyl (HTV) and jade glitter HTV. They have various sizes, I went with 12x20, that left plenty of extra for future projects!

Next was the design. I have been using an iPhone app for years that allows you to add text and graphics to your photos. It dawned on me, why don't I try to use that for shirt designs? Well, that my friends was a genius idea! Rhonna Designs is by far, one of my favorite iPhone apps. They also have an online store where you can purchase the same things for your PC. I believe the app is $1.99. It comes with quite a few things with the option to buy extra packs. Totally worth it, I'm pretty sure I own all of the extras!

I hope you enjoy, and I can't wait to share my future projects with you all!
